Antecedents
Early in its history, the Port of Montevideo was the leader in the development of the country and region. Location
The Port of Montevideo, located in Río de la Plata is geographically shaped as the main cargo transportation route of MERCOSUR. Absorbed in the centre of the influential zone of almost 200 million residents, Montevideo constitutes the integration crux of MERCOSUR.

Free Port
A system of “free port” rules in Montevideo since the Port Services Act N° 16,246 came into effect 4th May, 1992. This makes Montevideo into the first and only terminal of the South American Atlantic coast which precinct is a zone of customs exclusion. The rule states that the circulation of goods in Montevideo “shall be free” and that it “will demand neither authorizations nor formal proceedings”. It also states that “during its permanence in the customs enclosure port, goods shall be exempt from all fees and surcharges pertaining to importation or due to the same”.

Connections
To the Port of Montevideo converges the main access routes to the countries of the region. Three international bridges over river Uruguay connect by land to the Mediterranean zones of the continent. By the East, up-to-date roads connect river Uruguay with the Brazilian river. The Uruguayan railway branch is set out in a radial way from Montevideo. The regional standardization of the trail allows any kind of connection with Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Meanwhile, the Port of Montevideo has a double railway branched in the different docks.
The Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco (International Airport of Carrasco) is situated just 18 km from the Port of Montevideo.
